Luggage allowance.
When you decide who you are flying over with it is a good idea to check if they
have a special allowance for people emigrating.  I know from personal
experience that Singapore air have such an allowance which is great, but
there are a couple of points to look out for:
  • If you come out to Australia to have your visa validated but move out at a
later date the airline will not honour the emigration baggage allowance
becasue it has to be your first time going to Australia since your visa
    was granted.
  • If you have a stop over (as we did) in Singapore again they will not
honour the extra baggage allowance because you are not going directly
    to Australia.
these are points that are worth remembering and when you book your flights
with whichever company ensure you double check the rules in relation to
baggage allowance.
Our luggage adventure!

The day had come, we were walking into Manchester airport with  a lot of luggage (even
though we had got rid of 2 bin bags worth yesterday when we couldn't shut the case, remind
me again why we were taking thick coats to Queensland!).
We got to the counter to be told that we were over our luggage allowance but becasue the
flight was only half full it was ok, however no bag is allowed to be over at certain weight (don't
quote me but I think it's around 32k) and one of our cases was over so they said we had to
reduce the weight, but everything in the case we needed so what do we do?
I asked if there was a room where we could go and unpack.  But "no", oh joy, we had to unpack
on the departure checking in desk floor space, with a 2 year old who was desperate to get out
of his pram!  David ran in to the shopping area and bought a small case, I then had to unpack
and then re-pack spreading the weight out...not the best start I can tell you!!!
We then went of to Singapore for a lovely few days, following that back we went to Changi
airport in Singapore to continue on to Australia.
Here they weren't as lenient, and charged us for the extra weight allowance, however we were
lucky because we were about 30k over, I explained we were emigrating and had wanted the
extra allowance but because we wanted a stop over due to having Josh we wern't allowed the
extra amount.
The girl was sympathetic and went to her supervisor and he said they would only charge us for
10k, the amount charged was approximately 34 singapore dollars per kilo, this translated into a
total cost of approximatley £180 pounds, we were very lucky as it would have been extremely
expensive if we had been charged for the full 30k.
Thank you kind lady and supervisor!
